My father, Glade S Wittwer, Sr, was in the 164th Engineer Combat Battalion, where he was the C.O. of B Company. He landed on Utah Beach on June 26, 1944. From then until the end of the war he served in France, Belgium, & Germany. For awhile, in Feb of '45 he was attached to the 1110th Engineer Combat Group. I believe he may have been in the 1175th Engineer Combat Group prior to that, but I haven't been able to confirm it. Pappy wasn't able to confirm much of the information himself. He spent a lot of time at the National Archives trying to research where the 164th was at any given time without much success. For many years, beginning in the '90s, he attended an annual reunion with the 164th. He died on March 31st, 1912, after a failed operation.

I had the opportunity to meet Don Straith for a few minutes at the U of M Hospital. After our brief discussion I know why/how we won the war. Don and all the great folks like him are the answer. It is an honor to meet him!

It's wonderful to see that you posted my dear friend Ed Saraniero's Footnotes. Please keep his memory alive on your website. He passed away yesterday, at age 94, while I held his hand and prayed for him. He was a great man, who taught me much. May he rest in peace. Roman Pallone

Hello All! This is such an outstanding website and you have done a fantastic job on putting so much material together. I finished writing my mother's story "Through Innocent Eyes - The Chosen Girls of the Hitler Youth," and now, I am starting to write my father's story. He was in the 65th Infantry, 1280th Army Corp. of Engineers Battalion, Company C. I started a little FB page with the 1280th and I am gathering up more information to write his historical/fictional book. He has since passed away. I found your website and look forward to hearing from anyone who was in the same company. Thank you. Cindy

I`m looking for some information about Chester W Owen.
He was whit the 1219th Engineer Fire Fighting Platoon and killed in Malmedy
On December 24, 1944 - Christmas Eve – units of the 1219th responded to fires in Malmedy alledgedly set by aerial strikes by Allied aircraft. Whether going to, return from or fighting the fire is unknown as all records around that date, if created, no longer exist. During the going, the returning or the fire fighting Private Chester W. Owens was killed. His autopsy report says Massive Internal Injuries due to concussion. Whether a mortar or artillery round or a major vehicle mishap is unknown.
I`m the owner of a Dodge WC 52 and I’m looking markings for on my Dodge.
Do you know what kind of markings the 1219th had on their vehicles so I can put them on my Dodge.
Greetings Aad van der Horst
