It looks like cross hairs one sees in a rifle scope

What are the colors??

If it is a Blue and White---the cross hairs blue and the background white, then that would be the 35th Infantry Division, which was part of Patton's Army.

BTW, yesterday I bought a DVD copy of "Kelly's Heroes" with my main man Clint. They were wearing the shoulder patch of the 35ID.

Click on the Link in my Signature and scroll down past the table to see the shoulder patches of the Infantry Divisions. Of course, his patch could be a special Engineer unit patch and not in this table.

Thanks for the reply but the patch is not the 35 ID. I checked like you suggested and it is close but no cigar. This photograph is somewhat colorized but the coloring inside the patch looks brown. Maybe this will help..... The crosshairs run from the edge of the patch to the edge of the patch. They are not inset like the 35th ID. To be honest the patch in the photo looks subdued. Does that help at all?

The 341st were a general service engineering regiment. I will have more info within the next few hours. Am scanning some pages for you.

You can try writing to Richard Horrell of WWII Connections too. He has over 5000 books in his collection. He very well may have info on the patch that he wore.

I will try to scan/copy this photograph. The problem is the photo is in a gold leaf frame in my Mom's house. I will do what I can but Mom is more than a little protective of this picture.

I can't blame your mom regarding the photo. I know you won't, but please don't take it out of the frame if you think you might damage it. We will figure this out one way or the other.

The patch I described was the black and white patch I had seen in the ww11 book "Overseas with the 341st. As I explained to Marion the patch in the book is blacked in from the 12:00 to 2:00 position and from the 6:00 to the 8:00. So now that I refer to your divison patch site it must be the 7th. Is this correct?

Yep. 7th Infantry Division. It does appear to be that. At first you said it was subdued and I was thinking Viet Nam era patch. But this is either a colorized photo or a faded color photo and so the colors can be off by quite a bit. Old faded photos tend to loose their red pigment or for more modern photos they can lose their Blue.

Now try to ask around and see if you can find old letters or such that would give more clues to his exact unit. You will be surprised that some relative will have a letter stuffed away somewhere.

Last weekend, my aunt showed me 5 "undiscovered" letters from her husband---2 of them were sent from Stalag IIb. The letters were sent to his brother and had been in their posession.

Those distant Aunts are good at saving old clippings but they also are slow to find them and show them to others.
