Posting this here for a friend. Here is his letter of inquiry regarding the 610th Engineers Light Equipment Company
Dear Marion:
"...I am stationed at Camp Beale , CA . I have received a request from the base historian to see if there was a 610th Engineers Light Equipment Company stationed here when this place was under the Army as Camp Beale . During the war Camp Beale was the home of the 13th Armored Division. The engineer unit assigned to the 13 AD was the 124th Engineer Battalion. At this time I can find no information of a 610th Engineers Light Equipment Company. The background story I have is that a James E. Redding of the 610th Engineers Light Equipment Company and was assigned to Camp Beale, CA for training in took part in the Normandy Invasion. The 13 AD did not arrive in the ETO until Jan 1945. In your experience, do you have any information on this engineer unit or how I can track it down?..."

Here's another person who is looking for info on that unit. I am going to contact him and let them know that they can contact their father's records from the his local VA. They would have his records if he ever received medical treatment from the VA.

Comments: Hello, My Grandson and myself are trying to find any info on the 610th Engineer Light Equipment Company from 1943 to 1945. My dad was in the 610th and we have very little info on his service to his Country. We know he was sent to Ft. Beale in Calf. to be crossed trained for the Normandy Invasion but have no Idea what he was there in calf for. Any Info on the 610th would be greatly appreciated .His service Records were lost in the fire in KC Mo. so we have very little data. Dads Serial # was 34539827 he was a T5 and entered the service at Camp Blanding Florida in 1943 his name was James E Redding.
Thank You
Charles Redding

Hmmm....
This page shows that they were attached to the 101st Airborne during the landings. I am going to post this here, but with reservation. Everything else has pointed to them being independent during the landings at Normandy (see above post). Ah, more research is due...

Marion,
Thanks for getting back in touch with me. In fact, there's already
a book about the 238th, but it really is more about some of the unit's
members, than about the various aspects of what the unit did during
the war. The unit also holds annual reunions, so it shouldn't be too
hard to collect details about what they did. My particular interest in
the 238th stems from an event I'm involved with, which takes place
each June, out in NE Oklahoma called 'The Oklahoma D-Day Event.'
The promoter of the D-Day event, Dewayne Convirs, stages it in part
to honor of his grandfather, Enos Armstrong, who was a member
of the 238th. What I'd hoped to do was to see about obtaining a copy
of the Army's records pertaining to the unit so I could present them
to Dewayne.
Sincerely,
Andrew Van Der Plaats
Editor/publisher 'Stars and Stripes D-Day Special Edition'
I wrote to Andrew and told him where to obtain the official records for the unit. Am waiting to hear back from him.
It's wonderful to hear about these events.
