I wasn't sure if I've mentioned this story or not. This is a book that was made into a movie that stared Kiefer Sutherland. A great movie, even though a little intense for children, etc.

To End All Wars by Ernest Gordon.

Gordon was a member of the Argle & Sutherland Highlanders who was captured early in the war in April 1942 and sent to a Japanese POW camp in Thailand, where they worked on the infamous "Railway of Death". The leader of the prisoners saw that the men would die unless they had hope to live. They started a school to teach and express their thoughts and ideas, which kept them alive. There was one American soldier in the camp with the British and at first he was bitter towards his captors and tried to escape. Then he saw one of his fellow soldiers show the love of Christ in this difficult circumstances and he sought to conquer hate through love. The dramatic ending depicts the difference between the ultimate sacrifice for our fellow man and the bitter end that hatred can bring.

After the war, Gordon became a Presbyterian minister and the Chaplain of Princeton University. He went back to Japan and Thailand and met one of his captors.

A powerful movie. And a great performance by Kiefer Sutherland and Robert Carlyle.
