THE LITTLE KNOWN FRONT: The Battle of the Bulge in the Communes of Libramont, St. Hubert and Ste. Ode
By Eric Urbain
Translated By Lane Barton, G-345
3rd printing, February 2006
300 pages, 150 photographs and maps
The Little Know Front is an hour-by-hour account of the action that took place between December 21, 1944 and January 14, 1945 in the communes of Libramont, St. Hubert, and Ste. Ode - a sector long neglected by writers and historians.
Far from giving the great leaders their customary strokes, this book wherever possible, gives priority to the testimony of the soldier and civilian who lived through the action. Included are many accounts by the Golden Acorn men and also by soldiers of the 11th Armored and the 17th Airborne Divisions. Interwoven with their personal experiences are details drawn from After Action Reports, unit journals, and historic records.
The view from the other side is not neglected and reflections on the fighting are presented by former members of the Panzer Lehr Division and the Fuehrer Begleit Brigade.

UNLESS VICTORY COMES: Combat With a Machine Gunner in Patton's Third Army
By Gene Garrison, with Patrick Gilbert
Published 2004
266 pages
Gene Garrison's story is told through the eyes of the common soldier, a man who might not know the name of the town or the location of the next hill that he and his comrades must grimly wrestle from the enemy but who is willing to die in order to carry the war forward to the hated enemy. He writes of the simple pleasure derived from finding a water-filled pudde deep enough to fill his canteen from; a momentary respite in a half-destroyed barn that shields him from the bitter cold and penetrating wind of an Ardennes winter; the solace of friendship with a core of veterans whose lives hang upon his actions and whose actions might help him survive the bitter, impersonal death they all face.
The rich dialogue and a hard-hitting narrative style bring the reader to battlefield manhood alongside Garrison, to each moment of terror and triumph faced by a young soldier far from home in the company of strangers.

Hi Jim!
I don't believe we've met yet! Hope you are well and not too cold up there in Jersey. I am in West Virginia myself.

God bless those heroes who suffered and died, for plain folks, like you and me.
War is a crime. Ask the infantry and ask the dead.
I wasn't sure if I've mentioned this story or not. This is a book that was made into a movie that stared Kiefer Sutherland. A great movie, even though a little intense for children, etc.
To End All Wars by Ernest Gordon.
Gordon was a member of the Argle & Sutherland Highlanders who was captured early in the war in April 1942 and sent to a Japanese POW camp in Thailand, where they worked on the infamous "Railway of Death". The leader of the prisoners saw that the men would die unless they had hope to live. They started a school to teach and express their thoughts and ideas, which kept them alive. There was one American soldier in the camp with the British and at first he was bitter towards his captors and tried to escape. Then he saw one of his fellow soldiers show the love of Christ in this difficult circumstances and he sought to conquer hate through love. The dramatic ending depicts the difference between the ultimate sacrifice for our fellow man and the bitter end that hatred can bring.
After the war, Gordon became a Presbyterian minister and the Chaplain of Princeton University. He went back to Japan and Thailand and met one of his captors.
A powerful movie. And a great performance by Kiefer Sutherland and Robert Carlyle.

The Young Liberators - by Kenneth C. Thayer with Allan D. Foote - Price $14.95
http://www.oneidacountyhistory.org/Bookstore/BookStore2.asp
This is the documented record of a solitary combat soldier. It is the factual saga of a United States infantry company of 200 GI's, a regiment of four thousand, one division of fifteen thousand. Brave men: forgotten to many except their families and comrades. This book is an archival reconstruction of discarded units of organization deactivated from military service fifty-six years ago.
Between June 1944 and May 1945, the men of the United States 301"' Infantry Division participated in every major western European campaign, from Normandy to the Elbe River, earning them the, sobriquet, "Workhorse of the Western Front". The official United States Army Historian for the Western Front, S. L. A. Marshall, would proclaim the 30th as "The finest infantry division in the European Theater of Operations."
Except for a period of convalescence, PFC Kenneth C. Thayer was with them almost every step of the way. This is the beginning of his story: Volume One: From Civilian to Soldier. It is a privilege to share it with you.
