Went to visit a WWI Memorial in Montsec, France. It is situated on the top of a mountain that was a key observation post in the area. The offensive took place fron 12-16 September 1918. They siezed over 15,000 prisioners and controlled more than 700 square kilometers of land.

During WWII the memorial was used by the Germans as a machine gun position. During the shelling of the position the memorial was damaged. It was repaired in 1948.

It's kind of eerie and sad to think that a WWI Memorial, the War that was supposed to END ALL WARS, had to be used to fight the next GREAT WAR. Really puts things into perspective. It would appear that in this world, there is no hallowed ground.

Sad to say , but there are lots of places like this in France , Belgium etc...

But now for us Belgian citizens , they are the symbol for 6 decades of peace . A luxury because we haven't been in war for 62 years now !!!!

That's almost a record !
