Hoooiee, do I have a good one to tell about today! I bought this movie on ebay and watched it yesterday. It was a made for TV mini-series that was not released. The only copies available to the public now were made for Academy members for Emmy consideration and are already being sold as Collector's items. The box on mine says "For Your Consideration In All Categories." Okay, enough on that... This series is killer! It depicts Hitler's life from his days as a no-count artist through his imprisonment and rise to power, and ends before war is declared. The actors are mostly British, although Mathew Modine (Memphis Belle) has a large role in it also. The actor who plays young Hitler doen't much reseamble the real one, but his intensity in this role more than make you forget that and feel like you are watching the development of a true Sociopath. Highly recommend if you get a chance to see it.
BTW...if anybody has a DVD player that can also record and make duplicates I would be more than happy to loan any of the movies in my collection that might interest you.
Cheers!

I saw a copy on Amazon the other day for $30 and went ahead and picked it up. Apparently this was in fact shown on TV in the United States in May of 2003 despite protests...

I'm glad you were able to find a copy. I was actually a bit worried about not being able to replace mine if it got lost or damaged.
As for the fuss, I can't see why there was any at all, unless it was being made by former Nazis who didn't like to see the truth about the man they so admired. As I said before, the actor who portrays Hitler really bears no resemblance, but really gives a convincing portrayal of a Sociopathic Misfit with some charisma!

OK...I got it and I watched it but I wasn't too impressed with the overall production. The actors did well and all but I guess it's just impossible to put 30 years of life in a three hour movie. I've read the Hitler books by Toland, Shirer, and Payne and I found this movie lacking. The storylines seemed rushed and incomplete. Hitler was portrayed as history expects him to be portrayed minus any element of humanism. This was a good show but I give it little creedence on a realistic scale... Too much hollywood....

I enjoyed watching it but understand that others might not. If you want to see a caricature of Hitler as far as movies is concerned, then see "The Fall of Berlin," a self-serving dramatic film made at Stalin's behest in 1945, or for that matter, any movie made in Russia that has Hitler's character in it! Here you will find a wide-eyed raving lunatic that constantly throws tantrums. Actually that was probably the general impression of him in the USA at the time also.
The producers of "Downfall" were critisized in the media for making Hitler appear "too human"in the most recent film about him, but I thought Bruno Ganz(?) made the most believable Fuehrer yet!
