Here's a photo with an interesting history. This is what Jim relayed:

This is a photo that can be found on the website below. This was a boxer named Billy Conn, who was from Pittsburgh, PA, and one of his boyhood heroes. He never dreamed he'd be on his website. The photo can be seen there under Photos/Publicity.

http://billyconn.net/

Jim received a letter from Tim Conn, the son of the boxer:

Jim:

I identified you on the website. Believe it or not about a week after you sent me the photo I got an email from a soldier in Japan telling me that his father was stationed in Paris during the war and drove my father around on VE day. His dad happened to be from Pittsburgh. He asked me if I had any articles concerning that day. I told him it just so happens that i have a photo taken that day and that his dad may just be in it. I emailed him the photo and sure enough his father is in it. He is in top row 3rd. from rt. wearing a cap. Photo is creased on his face. It has been confirmed by 3 family members that it is him. His name was Mark Schreiber. He was career military man, retired a full colonel and died a few days before 9/11.

What a coincidence!...

Tim Conn

My grandfather, LTC John C. O'Brien, CO, 2832nd Bn, during his infantry training at Fort Knox in 1936. When called to active duty in 1939, the Army noticed that he had a civil engineering degree and said, "Guess what. . ." - from there on he was an engineer. The last picture is from WWII. Without color its difficult to say whether he was major or LTC at the time. The man in the middle is the XO of the group, I believe. No ideas on the captain on the right.

Great timing there CaptO! I am currently working on the "camp" section of the documentary, and your words will fit perfectly into the segment!!

I may be able to name a few individuals in the one photo, but at a future date.

Thanks!!!!

Many of you may have seen this photo of Rocky on his page on the main site, but now it's even more interesting because of the following letter I received this week, along with a photo. Placing both photos here:

Hello Ms. Chard,

I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the picture of Rocky Riojas receiving the Bronze Star award. I have attached a picture of my dad, Roger L Elliott, receiving the same award apparently at the same place, note the (speaker?) in the background. I would very much like to contact Rocky thinking that perhaps they knew each other. My dad died in '50 in a car accident when I was 9 years old before he could tell me any war stories. Perhaps Rocky could tell me something about my dad. We live in Hollywood, Md. about 60 miles south of D.C. I also have some pictures similar to what is on your site....

Sincerely,

Shelton R. Elliott

Here is another picture of my grandfather - now that I got my scanner working!

This picture was taken in about 1999 or 2000 so it was only a few years before he died in 2004.

I always loved this picture because that's how I remember him most of time; laughing and having great time. I'm sure those who knew him from WWII would probably have the same remembrances even though the part of his life they shared with him was hardly a fun one.

Ok guys

the photo shows the German Strongpoint WN65 on Omaha Beach and is situated north of the D514 in the village of Laurent-sur-Mer. This is a well know picture of troops of the 2nd US Inf. Div. walking of the beach. The Bunker is a H677 type. Inside is only one of two ORIGINAL remaining guns in casemates on this beach. The gun is a 5cm KwK gun. The other original is an 88mm gun at WN72, north of the D514 at Vierville-sur-Mer.

he other big guns is from the Longues battery. Longues-s-Mer Just to the west of Arromanches, the Battery is signposted from the D 514. the first photo shows one of Casemates Gun number 1 at Longues. In the German war journals there is an entry that this gun had, the day before D-day, a minor hit in front of the gun, during an air raid. This small damage was not discovered. So on D-day while fighting the allied warship Ajax and more ships, a shell exploded in the chamber of the gun, and a barrel burst happened. The blast went backwards to the ammunition rooms and blew out the back of the bunker

¨

After the war, every town or village Mayor in the battle torn parts of Normandy and France was allowed by the government to remove any metal, equipment, food, materials, etc. and sell/use the items for the well of his people. The mayor of Longues-sur-Mer decided to keep the guns inside, to be a memorial of a bloody and hostile time ion the past.

Tthe observation bunker also called "B-Stelle" of Longues-sur-Mer Battery became famous . It was also the location of the film "The Longest Day" when Pluskat saw the allied ships coming out of the fog on June 6 1944.
