Sunk off the Norwegian island of Fedje in 1945, the German sub U-864 has steadily seeped mercury into the surrounding waters, to the dismay of local fishing villages. Now the government plans literally to cover up the issue. Raising the wreck would pose too great a danger of further contamination, so the Norwegian Coastal Administration has recommended covering the sub with absorbent sand and then encasing the site in fill - burial at sea!

Always amazes me to learn how long these sunken warships continue to seep oil & other toxins after decades undersea. Just think of all the oil tankers and various other ships that were sunk in both oceans during WWII! It's a wonder that any aquatic life has survived. :armata_PDT_23:
