Carl W. “Bud” Black, 85, a resident of Bennetts Switch, was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who died peacefully at 11:38 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his family, and flew away to be with our Lord, his Savior, Jesus Christ. Born Jan. 13, 1926, in Peru, he was the son of Orlie P. and Fern (Griswold) Black. He was the husband of Betty L. (Hall, May, Langley) Black, who survives. They were married May 1, 1982, in Kokomo, at Gospel Light Mission.

 

He retired as a tool maker from Delco Electronics on Aug. 30, 1987, after 27 years of service. Previously, he was employed at Square D in Peru, where he had been president of Local 2069 IAM.

 

Bud was a fun-loving man who liked sports, especially golf and basketball. He enjoyed his morning coffee, took on the challenge of daily crossword puzzles for years and enjoyed a lively game of cards with family and friends.

 

He was a member of McGrawsville U.M. Church, Battle of Bulge Veterans, Disabled Vets, Golden Acorn Reunion Association and UAW Retirees #292.

 

He was very proud of his tour of duty in Europe during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct, American Theater, European Theater with three Battle Stars, Victory Medal and German Occupation medals, along with the Combat Infantry Badge and Presidential Citation.

 

He is survived by his wife, Betty L. Black, Bennetts Switch; daughter and son-in-law, Lana and Michael Bullock, Charlotte, N.C.; grandson, Peter J. (Alex) Bullock, Charlotte, N.C.; great-granddaughter, Whitney Dibble, California; great-great-grandchildren, Hannah Rose and Shiloh Paige, California; granddaughter, Stacey L. Bullock, Beverly, Mass.; grandson, Jesse J. Bullock, Largo, Fla.; great-granddaughters, Stephanie Stinson, N.C., and Brooke Stinson, Alabama; grandson, Jason M. Bullock, Salem, Mass.; granddaughter, Davina L. (Chris) Haywood, Stanley, N.C.; great-granddaughter, Sarah, and great-grandson, Samuel, both of Stanley, N.C.; stepson, Shane A. (Beth) May, Waupecong; step-grandchildren, Brooke Nicole and Blake Hunter May, Waupecong; stepdaughter, Wendi (Erik) Atkinson, Bennetts Switch; step-grandchildren, Khyrstin Leigh Chance and Dylan L. Chance, Peru, and Gabriela Grace Atkinson, Bennetts Switch; extended family, Josh (Rachelle) Chance, Peru, Brandon Cook, Kokomo, Haydon Chance, Peru, Gary and Jackie May, Greentown, and P.D. and Charleen Childers, Amboy; biological children, Terry L. Black, Peru, and Wayne A. (Berta) Black, Denver; grandchildren, Adam (Cindy) Black, Texas; great-grandchildren, Alex and Kyle Black, Texas, and Ashley Black, Peru; biological daughter, Jayne E. Black, Peru; brother and sisters, Rosetta Burns, Fort Wayne, Ruth Grady, Peru, Marge Edwards, Mesa, Ariz., Mary Hoagland, Peru, Pat McIntosh, Kalamazoo, Mich., Jerry L. (Glenda) Black, Cantonment, Fla., and Nancy (Dennis) Norris, Twelve Mile, brother and sisters-in-law, Harold (Pat) Hall, Kokomo, Villa Humphrey, Salem, and Ruby Lee, Kokomo; and a host of nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; brother, John A. “Jack” Black; sisters-in-law, Traudel Black and Bea Black; a grandson, Aaron Black; and brothers-in-law, Dick Grady, Murrell Edwards, Hal McIntosh, Max Burns and Raymond Hoagland.

 

The family would like to extend a personal thank you to all the staff at Golden Living Center, Kokomo and Southerncare Hospice, and Drs. Westrom, Frappier and Scheffler and their staff for their excellent care of Bud during his illness.

 

A celebration of Bud’s life will be 1 p.m. Thursday at McGrawsville United Methodist Church, 9377 S. 300 East, Amboy, with the Rev. Kenny Cole and the Rev. Steve Austin officiating. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.

 

Flowers may be sent directly to the church. Memorial contributions may be made to McGrawsville United Methodist Church, Amboy. Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.murrayweaverfuneralhome.com. Arrangements were entrusted to Murray Weaver Funeral Home, Galveston.
