Today 70 years ago the 237th Engineer Combat Battalion construted the bridge across the Rhine: 398.7 m in 10 hours. With this Performance they won a bet against Gen. Collins and a lot of beer.

Hello Christoph!

You always find the most interesting things!

And it is today, also 70 years ago, that "General Collins also told General Hodges of two Americans captured in the fighting in the Hurtgen Forest in October, who re-appeared into our lines this morning."

The day's entry says that General Collins flew in this afternoon to confer With General Hodges and in the entry is mention of your Bridge. General Collins lost his bet - the bridge was completed in record time and he had to provide beer for every member of the Engineer Battalion which constructed it.

Thanks for bringing to my attention this day - the 70th Anniversary of my Dad's freedom!

Jean
