RAF Blakehill Farm was opened in 1944 prior to D Day and operated Dakota's (C47's/DC3's) of RAF Transport
Command Nos.233 & 271 Squadrons and No. 437 Husky Squadron RCAF, as an assembly point for 50 Horsa
gliders which took part in Operation Market Garden at Arnhem. The gliders were flown by members of the
Glider Pilot Regiment. The above squadrons also took part in re-supply as the allies moved forward.
This RAF station ceased flying operations in 1946 and is now a National Trust Nature Reserve.
Each year a service of rememberance is held at two cairns raised to the memory of those who served there.
