Clue , he was a United States Marine Corps officer who posthumously received the Medal of Honor for heroic conduct during action during the Battle of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. He also earned the Silver Star Medal during the initial landing on Tulagi in the Solomon Islands and the Purple Heart.

Oh see now you make it too easy! I'll wait a day or so, however, to others in on the game. He had a destroyer escort named for him and then its construction was cancelled. He eventually had another destroyer named for him right at the end of the war.
