Here's a description (taken from Amazon.com)

In the Face of Obstacles is the true story of a heavy machine gunner in World War II. It chronicles my father's experience as told by soldiers who were there with him, by photographs including his own, and by his regiment narrative histories. Put them all together, and a detailed account of their daily lives unravels with boot camp dirt in the green hills of Alabama; a seasick troop ship across the Atlantic Ocean to Casablanca, where "A-rabs ain't got cigarettes" and camels stink; a dusty boxcar ride across North Africa, where people live underground; hardcore training camps in the desert of Algeria, where cognac doubles as lighter fluid; and a thousand miles of frontline combat in a rugged country called Italy. It is all through the eyes of "the infantrymen who would likely be wounded or killed."

I was in the Udvar-Hazy Center last Saturday (the Air And Space Museum by Dulles Airport) and I had the good fortune to meet Wolfgang W. E. Samuel. He is the author of German Boy and several other books. German Boy is an autobiographical story of his life in NAZI Germany (he was 10 when the story begins toward the end of the war) and during the Soviet occupation. I have just started the book so I don't have much of a review yet, but it looks great. Later in life, he came to America and served as a pilot with the USAF from 1965 through 1985 and retired as a colonel. He has many other books and my wife and I picked up a couple while we were there. Unfortunately, I had German Boy at home so it is not signed!!

I read a lot of books about Normandy and a couple about Dragoon in Southern France but this is a winner - Eisenhower's Thorn on The Rhine by Prefer. It starts lucky enough with the godawful fighting in Rambervillers and Remiremont but not in detail because he is telling about the fight on the Rhine. Our Regiment fought continuously with the 117th Recon, and our artillery, the 83rd Chemical mortar battalion and the entire thing was blurred by the fighting in the North, Now this book tells almost nothing about those units but when I read it we were there. It was our story of 44-45 and I hope others from the 36th, the 117th, and the 83rd can read it.
