Since I didn't get a lot of interest in my last post, I thought I would throw another Engineer Battalion name out there and see if anyone wants to share. As with my last post, the National Archive site does not have much information scanned or posted yet for 1945 and many of the facts I am trying to learn are from later in the war. While I hope the morning reports from this time period get scanned and made available, I understand what a monumental task that is and don't see it happening any time soon. I only wish I lived closer to the archive as this job seems like a dream for me to do. I hope that anyone who wants to share some insight might see this and chime in. I would love to share any information I currently have in return.

Thanks again,

Hello to all,

This site has been a wealth of information for me over the years, and I am again coming back with another request. Within my research I have hit a roadblock in completing my grandfather's service timeline. It seems that the information via morning reports has not yet been digitized at the National Archives yet so, I turn to all of you in hopes of finding the rest of his history. I am able to follow somewhat of a timeline leading up to the end of 1944 but the reports for his units in 1945 are yet to become available. I have photos he left me that show where he was but not facts to support the images. My hope is that someone may have some information so we can do a swap and with luck, help each other out. Thank you for hearing my story and for all the help I have already received. If you want to do an info trade, please let me know and I will be glad to share.

Thank you all,

Good Morning Marion,

Thank you for your quick reply. I have been involved in genealogy for more than 45 year and am in the process of downsizing and looking for good homes for my "stuff".

I was doing a wide sweep of sites. If I recall correctly, it seems my father has the same timeline as something I read on your site. I have attached the picture of the 1281 Combat labeled Manila, Nov 1945. If you can make a connection to anyone in the photo, I will check the many letters my father wrote home and the many other pictures I have.
Hopefully, I can make a contact.
Carol Bickel
in Maryland

While most of the 540th files from the National Archives were uploaded to the main site, several months were missing, due in part to the vast amount of work it takes to organize thousands of pages of documentation, then scan and upload them. However, I'm pleased to announce that I am making great strides in accomplishing that task.

This month I have already added the months of Dec 44, Jan, Feb, and April of 45. This evening I compiled May of 45 and am hoping to upload it within the next few days.

The amount of information is incredible. What a daunting task it must have been to type and submit all those required documents to the Army. And of course, this was before the age of computers! No way to save. Hey, we need that in triplicate. Pass me the carbon sheets. You guys deserve medals for that!!

So, the last files to complete the set are May through November of 1945. The last few will be easy, for there's very little to share after the mid-summer months during the occupation of Germany.
