Jo-Lyn:

This is a shot in the dark - because the post is so old... My name is Chris. My grandfather was in C Company, 135th Engineer Combat Bn, and served with your Uncle John Denapoli. I am in the midst of a family history project on my grandfather Jack McKenna, and have a few documents that reference John in them... If you still check here for replies, and/or have interest in them reach out here & I'll provide. If you have any photos you know to be of "C Company men", I am interested.

Hi everyone,

I realize this is a reallllly old thread, but I ran across Bill Carr’s research a while ago and have been using it to piece together my grandfather’s time with the 49th. I have the ECB’s returning passenger list (Paul A. Meisenhelder, November 25, 1945) on which he is listed, but I am still looking for confirmation that he was with the 49th the entire time he was in the Army.

I emailed Bill to an address in this thread and have not yet heard back. Is he or any of the previous posters still on this forum?

The link at which his file was posted before is now broken, but it’s available on the WayBack Machine. It’s also available from Amazon in book form—which is totally worth it, as there are also photos and maps.

Thanks to everyone—I’m so glad I ran across this thread! I’m interested to know if anyone else has further information. In particular, Bill, if you’re still here and interested, I’m interested to know where you found some of the primary sources cited in your work. Battle casualty reports, and the S2 and S3 journals in particular. Did you use the physical items? I found morning reports online, but haven’t yet found the others.

Unfortunately, my grandfather’s personnel file is not at the St. Louis Personnel Center office. I’m going to try a FOIA request with the VA next, but by all reports, the VA is ignoring or denying those these days.

Best,

-Cindi

Hi, Larry,

I ran across this forum this year with the very same question, and even though your post is almost three years old, I want to share information that I found in case others land here. There are a few posts in this site where people share some resources about the 49th. There has not been activity on them in a long time.

https://ww2combatengineers.com/community/looking-for/49th-engineer-combat-battalion/#post-139

https://ww2combatengineers.com/community/introduce-yourself/49th-combat-engineers/#post-15817

Alas, most attachments are missing, and most URLs are now bad.

However, I want to bring a book to your attention: Ghost Battalion, by Bill Carr. It was self-published on the Lulu platform, but you can order it from Amazon.

I recently noticed that the Bill's file that makes up most of the content of Ghost Battalion is no longer online, but you can see it on the Wayback Machine. It's handy to be able to search the information.

Have you made it to Normandy yet? My grandfather was also in the 49th, Company "B." Do you know which company your grandfather was in? I have only been able to find mine listed on the passenger list returning from France to New York in November 1945, with the rest of the unit. I am still looking for confirmation that he was assigned to them in 1943 and served with them for the duration of his service.

Best of luck!
